How to check toxicity?

Postby abuhafss on Fri Jun 17, 2011 12:29 pm

Hi

How can we check or evaluate (apart from a Lab test) whether a certain PVC product is toxic or non-toxic?

Is any simple test?

Thanks for the help.

No simple test for toxicity that I know of-----you need to know ALLthe ingredients in the formulation, so each can be
evaluated for its toxicity. Or, ask your compound supplier for toxicity data.

I mean, is there any simple criteria or test which can help us in judging roughly, if any (third party's) PVC product is toxic or not?

None that I know of. But then that depends on what you consider TOXIC. If it is the plasticizer I assume there are tests.

Define toxicity, which is quite tricky as the regulations can be quite different between the US and Europe, for example.

Several categories of toxicity-----LD-50's (lethal dose in mg./kg body weight at which 50% death rate occurs)
Another version of the same thing is LC-50 (lethal concentration of a volatile-gas- at which 50% mortality occurs.)
Other toxicity measurements include eye and skin irritation-via rabbit testing, effects upon reproductive organs, etc.

Well, I know is not the most recommendable thing, but once I saw a test for a biodegradable additive. Thery bury some samples of the plastic compounded with the additive in a flowerpot. The green plant grow without problem.

Usually the labs take rats to feed them with the suspicius component to check what happens

Hope it helps
