HELP!! Does anyone know how to make dimple balls?

Postby sinolucia on Thu Jun 07, 2012 1:53 am

Hello all, I have a customer want to make dimple balls. I've searched the google, but I still have no idea how to make this.
How to make this dimple ball? Does it can be produced by injecting?
Here I've enclosed a picture, it is used for Cricket.

I've never seen or held a cricket ball, but I'll assume that they have a core like a golf ball. The core is placed in the mold and the outer dimpled shell is molded around it. The core is made or tightly wound rubber / TPE stands.

One would think that the process used to make the Golf ball would be similar to the Cricket ball process.

Louis...

Cricket is played in this part of the world like a religion and the cricket ball has nothing to do with plastics. It is made BY-HAND !

There is a core inside, covered with some more cores (made of cork) and finally covered with two "half-spheres" that are sewn together manually.

See how dumb I am, I read the original post "Here I've enclosed a picture, it is used for Cricket" and assumed the poster knew cricket. Though I do not think Golf uses yellow balls, so it was easy to believe cricket having never watched a game. Now I will need to do some research and get up to speed on another sport.

I am just now getting into Soccer, what the rest of the world calls football. Seems right to me, you play it with your feet. So it’s football. Maybe America should change the name of our popular game to Handball. Wait that is already a game called handball. Bummer - I thought I was on to something

I'm gonna burst your bubble again Louis, golf balls come in every color under the sun. Think putt-putt, everyone plays with a different color.

Louis..

IF golf balls are not white..they are yellow !
I prefer teeing off with yellow ball early in the morning but never in the evening. May be because they are more conspicuous ???

It is apparent that I don't play golf, or cricket.

However I was big into softball back when they were white, but they changed the balls to yellow around the time I got busy at work and stopped playing.

I did racketball for many years, no yellow balls there, but again, work kicked in and took priority.

There was a little tennis, and yes, they had yellow balls.

Did some stock car Racing - but no balls involved, other than those that allowed me to take a turn too fast.

Acually fluorescent yellow or orange golf balls are used in the North during the winter when there are snow patches on the course, to help locate your ball.

Back to the question, however, the dimples are created by movable pins within the cavity. The pins support the "center" to keep it located uniformly in the center of the finished ball during injection. Injection gates are located around the equator of the ball, and the pins are retracted during packing, and finally create the "dimples" in the ball.

Dimpled balls can also be compression molded. The "center" is covered with two molded hemispherical preforms of the cover material. The assembly is placed in the dimpled ball cavity. Heat and pressure is applied forcing excess material to flow into the flash cavities at the mold parting line.

Thank you Mr Rich, my engineer told me it can be manufactured by injection molding.
But what about the plastic material?

I don't know what cricket balls are made of, but golf balls are generally a compression-molded styrene-butadiene center with an injection-molded Surlyn (ionomer) or polyurethane cover.
