Flexible PVC gets de-shaped

Postby abuhafss on Tue Apr 24, 2012 3:53 pm

Hi

I need to make a (INJECTION) flexible nozzle which is required to be pressed/blocked for a period of time (maximum 5 years). When the blocking strip is released the nozzle should retain back its original shape.

PVC has failed because it get deshaped even sometimes the inner sides adhere each other.

Can someone recommend me some suitable material. I attach the picture of the nozzle for reference.

Thanks for help.

Thanks for the response.

I forgot to mention earlier, that nozzle has be bonded to a PVC body. Do you think PE or PP can be bonded to PVC with some adhesive solution?

PVC is one of those resins that barely bonds to itself, so the only chance you have of using a PP or PE is some sort of mechanical fastening.
I think the PVC for the nozzle is too soft or the seal plug too hard/stiff. Also the filler inside the assembly could be causing the issue.

I am successfully using an adhesive for bonding PVC with PVC. I have no idea if it would bond PVC with PE or PP. Mechanical fastening cannot be used.

I think you're out of luck w/ PVC to PP or PE glue/adhesive bonding. There may be strategies, but its not going to be easy.

There have been studies in the medical device industry, specifically for Intravenous sets that must be clamped and them opened to allow full flow. Perhaps you can do a search along those lines and find a page with that information. I believe that many formulations of PVC will begin to leach plasticizer in less than five years.

Shelf life for most products top out around the five year time frame.
