Will softening PS help reduce scratching?

Postby troubled on Fri May 18, 2007 5:26 am

I'm injection molding round 2.5" discs with a thickness of 2mm. The problem is that the surface seems to scratch too easily thus not allowing me to keep inventory, just 2 discs gently rubbing together will scratch surface or slide a disc across table top will scratch it.

What additives can I add to reduce scratching? I am using GPPS.

Have you tried HIPS? I am sure there may be some scratch resistant PS, I've just never ran it before. Could you switch to another resin that is more forgiving? Rick.

I was kinda hoping that I would not need to go another material just for the discs since most of my other items are GPPS, just trying to figure if there is an additive to reduce surface scratching. If HIPS is my only economical option then that will be the way I am heading.

Surface scratching

GPPS is fairly hard but quite glossy in a polished tool. HIPS is softer and will likely mark worse against any harder material. You may just need to vapor hone the tool to make the surface more matte which will hide the mar or scratch. A raised edge on the chip will also help lessen marking across the whole surface of the chip when it is slid across a flat surface, such as a table. GPPS will give you a metallic ring when dropped. HIPs will be more of a dull thud. Many people want their chips to have more weight. We added barrium sulfate to the chips to give them more heft.

You might ry a calcined clay at 10 - 15 parts. The clarity will be affected, but the results might raise scratch resistance.

I'm late but have you tryed Croda products?? I've not tested my sample yet but croda have a additive which is Incromax PS. It's a slip agent so necesserly it will reduce scratch.

You might also try adding 10-15% crystal styrene. It's more brittle but a little more scratch resistant.
