Material selection?

Postby RBW on Mon Jul 09, 2007 9:58 am

We are looking to kick off a new project and need some help in selecting an appropriate material.

The product is essentially a type of float to be used in the recreational marine market, it is pyramidial shaped with roughly 6" equilateral triangular side panels (flat with no ribbing).

The unit will need to have moderate impact resistance and good UV charachteristics along with the ability to easily accept screen printing. We need to find a solution that is readily available and cost effective for short-run while the product hopefully takes root.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!!

I presume you'll be rotomolding since you posted your question here. HDPE should be a great option. Is your part going to be filled with foam to keep it floating?

Doug,

We are hoping to utilize the RM process to create a completely sealed cavity of air for floatation. There is no weight on the float aside from its own and it will typically only be in the water for a few hours at a time.

How would I go about selecting the appropriate HDPE for something like this?

Thanks for your reply!

a 3-4 melt MDPE resin, pre-colored, then pulverized to about 30 mesh should work nicely.
