PET PVC Adhesion issue

Postby Adee on Sat Jan 24, 2009 3:05 am

Hello Everyone,

Whats the best way for PET thermoformed films to be able to stick with PVC laminated surfaces? Right now we are having problems with PET films being unable to stick with PVC laminated surface. Can we do anything on thermoforming machine such as temperature or cycle time changes to help with sticking? or do we need to apply some sort of adhesive to help with sticking.

On the other hand if the base lamination was of PET instead of PVC then would PET thermoformed film would stick with PET laminated surface?

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. =]

Ad,
I assume you are heat laminating the PET cover onto the PVC card. Have you thought about ramping up your laminating heat or increasing the dwell time. My gut feeling is that PET/PVC are somewhat compatible and should bond to one another if the heat cycle is adequate. Although their processing conditions are quite different; melt temps = 400F for UPVC vs 500F for PET, I think the PVC will tolerate a brief exposure at or near the PET melt temps. In any case, the conditions used to heat laminate PVC to PVC are not adequate to seal PVC to PET, if it is at all possible.

Thanks Len, increasing dwell time isn't an option because it will reduce the production. I did however found an adhesive that might work well in sticking PET with PVC =]
