Bonding silicone

Postby PDF on Tue Mar 25, 2008 12:03 pm

I've been asked to find a glue to help adhere a silicone rubber "tire" to an ABS roller.

The tire is about 1" ID and 1" long, with a smooth surface on the inside. The ABS roller is also smooth. There's a small lip that is supposed to hold the tire in place, but it will sometimes rock off the roller when it gets warm.

Don't ask about redesign at this point... that will happen, but I've been asked for a quick fix first - ie glue.

I've tried Rubber Cement, Super Glue, Neoprene, Contact Adhesive, Gorilla Glue – all failed to hold to the silicone tire.

The only one that held at all was the only one I thought would have a real shot - a Dow Corning RTV silicone sealant that I had in my garage. But it needs to cure (at least) over night which is undesirable.

Any other suggestions? Or a fast curing silicone?

Not sure if it will work, but how about "Shoe Goo"?

Have you tried a hot melt adhesive? Don't know if it will work but it may give you the grip you need.

We ended up giving up on the glue. I didn't get much hope from any adhesive companies either. I did feel vindicated since I told my bosses that I would try, but that silicone was going to be exceptionally hard to glue.

Some companies told me about something that MIGHT work a little... but ITW Devcon's response took the cake. it simply said:

"Peter; Nothing bonds to silicone rubber. Thanks!"

I laughed pretty hard when I saw this, so I thought I'd share with everyone.

ps - on a side note; a trick I learned when I was in the RV industry for loosening silicone caulk is to spray it with WD-40 first.
