There are still some good hotel prices available during NPE at expedia.com, travelcity.com, orbitz, etc. Some are nonrefundable rates that require advance payments. Even with the downturn hotel space in Chicago will be tight. Book your hotel asap. As an example here is what I found on travelcity. The two Club Quarters are near hotels with shuttle service to NPE. You may need to either click on the travelcity site that comes up or redo my search using their home page.

One NPE when I went late and the hotels were all booked I found and stayed at a Bed & Breakfast that was a 5 min walk to NPE. It was great. Sorry I don't have the details, but its an idea to look into.
