PVC Flexible Resin

Postby plastilina1979 on Mon Dec 10, 2007 6:49 am

Hi colleagues!
I have seen somewhere that there is a special kind of PVC resin, used for PVC Flexible compounding, which doesn't need plasticizer because of the presence of EVA or any other polymer as plasticizer in its structure.
I would be very grateful if someone could give me further information.
Best regards,

That probably would be a COMPOUND from a compound producer rather than a resin producer----try Poly One, Georgia Gulf, Teknor, Schulman, etc.

Hi !
I was talking about a resin called Elvaloy by Dupont.
Has someone used it? I would like to get some opinion about it.
Thanks,

Yes, Elvaloy (EVA) can be compounded with PVC as a "solid plasticizer"----meaning that the DuPont material is mixed into the PVC resin during the PVC compounding operation. It does provide some flexibility, but most compounders also use at least some plasticizer---polymeric, if permanence is paramount.

EVA/PVC compounds are suitable for higher hardness formulas for special applications such as low outgassing. Lower hardnesses may be obtained by combining with high molecular weight plasticizers. Dupont has a compounding guide for guidence.

Plastilina, Once upon a time there was this formulator (the old sinner) who used E-741 in a flexible compound. He was the largest single user of Elvaloy E-741 in the nation at that time. He might have some insight into the successful formulation of these materials. He has written this post.
