What Chemicals and or gasses are released when HDPE and pol

Postby PJJR on Tue Apr 22, 2003 6:34 pm

I was asked this earlier today, (I previously had bookmarked a web site that gave me this information, but it has inexplicately disappeared), any help would be appreaciated. Thanks :(

What Chemicals and or gasses are released when HDPE and pol

PJJR:

It would depend on the conditions of combustion. If there is ample oxygen, then the products of combustion are primarily carbon dioxide and water.

If there is a lack of oxygen, then carbon nonoxide could predominate instead of CO2.

Other, dogs and cats (gasses and volatile chemicals)may appear in very small quantities due to reaction residuals, chemical changes during heating, or polymer contamination, colorants, additives w/in the PE and PP.

I would suggest to just check with your MSDS of the material; there is a section which mentions the gasses that can be released with combustion.

Normally these are amines, amides, ketones, aldehydes etc but for PE and PP most will be CO2 and H2O and some alifatic 'thingies'.

But still, for a certain compound, check with the material safety data sheet.
