Where can I get some polymer samples?

Postby lucasjensen on Mon May 24, 2004 2:21 am

To me a lot of polymers (incl elastomers) are somewhat diffuse. I know what it is, and I read a lot about their properties in books ets. But I want to actually feel and touch the polymers in my own hands - only by doing that I get a more familar insight. Does anyone know where I can get some small samples. (you know, PVC (hard and soft), PMMA, PE, PP, PS, PES, ABS, PTFE etc etc).

If you can get to New York City June 15-17 for Plastec East or Plastics USA in Chicago Sept. 28-30 you can pick up molded samples.

There is also a sample kit of polymers for sale.

If you can spring for the cost of a trip to Germany there is K-2004 the granddaddy of plastics trade shows in October.

Are you near any schools that offer polymer processing courses? They will have samples of most polymers. You can locate a list of schools at

http://www.4spe.org

Also your local Home Depot, or equivalent will have many of the polymers in products they sell.

Samples around the house: Telephone ABS/PC alloy, TV cabinet and computer monitor usually ABS, Milk jug and ice cream pail HDPE, house siding PVC, Shower curtain flex PVC, other plastic bottles in kitchen usually PP if not HDPE, notebook computer screen PC, sewer lines ABS, high pressure water crosslinked PE. I'm sure others can suggest many more. Now isn't that cheaper than going to Germany?

Ah Copenhagen

I had a chance to visit your area while in the service. Very Nice from what I remember, though I must admit that I was young and did drink a bit on the days that I was there  Still, I remember the food was great in the resturaunts that we ate in and the night life not bad either

As to your samples, are you looking to get some of the plastic pellets or finished products?

If you want samples to keep, the place to get them is K 2004, 20-27 October, Dusseldorf Fairgrounds. There should be a european web site.
The U.S. web site is:
http://www.mdna.com

This is a Plastics and Rubber trade show and the largest one in the world. It can take several days just to walk through the exhibit halls with out stoping to talk with exhibitors. If you go you should be able to pick up as many samples as you can carry. You will need a way to identify the samples as they are not individually marked. The resin being molded or extruded is usualy noted on a sign in the booth of the processor.

As Bruce noted there are many samples around your home. If there is a home improvement megastore near you, you can find more samples there. Tivoli probably has a lot of plastic materials used.

Yes, but.........

Thanx for the advise about Düsseldorf. But I do not intend to go there (700 km) just because of some samples. I know some companies are dying to send some samples hoping for new customers. But which ones?

I thought "touchy-feely" ceased at about the 3d grade level. Use what initiative you have and run an internet search for the polymers, then ask the manufacturers to deliver them to your door.

The same companies that are exhibitors at the K 2004 show. The web site should have a list of exhibitors or request a flyer on the show. It may not have a complete list but should have enough to get you started.

Lucas

Go to the Society of Plastics Engineers home page - http://www.4spe.org
you can buy a sample kit along with an identification guide from their book store. They ship all round the work :D
