Bonding P O M and/or P P

I have the need to bond a few small pieces of P O M together, also some P P.

Can anyone tell me what solvents / glues can be used to bond / weld these pieces together??

Epoxy seems like the only choise as far as I know. Abrade the parts to get the best surface and slip or shear stressed joints are best. But joint loaded in tension or T-peel configurations do not work all that well. It is not a production method but good enough for home projects. Since you call it POM rather than nylon, I presume you have some plastics knowledge.

Bonding polypro is the age old problem. Because of the low surface energy nothing will stick. Some companies like MasterBond sell "hotmelts" for bonding polypro. I have never worked with them but would love to hear how they work.
Another option is Unitex "Pro-poly" a two part polyethylene. Have not used it either but the data seems convincing??

My company makes machines with polypro shells that we weld with hand welders that feed polypro stock. I would love to find a way to glue the sheet instead.

I am planning to sample but the Pro-poly but i doubt it will work (nothing ever does what "they" say it will.

If you want to talk to someone who knows everything, call up Dr. Brenner at Master Bond. He is a German gent with loads of bonding skills. He takes things slow but no BS, very old school.

Surface treatment is the key step.

Get some samples(tell them you have a million parts), find somthing that works, and let me know:)

Hi akcaj,

From history is well known that gluing of POM (acetal) doesn´t work. But we tried it anyhow . From my experiences I can talk only about POM. We tried a lot of possible glues and we didn´t find any good solution for mass production how to bond two POM parts together. But the "best" was to do it this way:
1. abrade the parts
2. ungrease parts - isopropyl alcohol works fine
3. use chemical activator of surface (for example Loctite primer 770)
4. use cyanoacrylate glue for plastics or epoxy (for example Loctite 406)

It is good in tension loading(if you have large contact surfaces) but it breaks very easily in bending.

So, you can try it but you will be probably unsatisfied. Any kind of welding process of POM is much more better than gluing.
